The Ruth Method of Evangelism

I must continue documenting the other matters the Lord has pressed on my heart, but I have one more post regarding our brothers and sisters caught in the CN movement.

I have heard numerous messages from the book of Ruth, but today I considered something I never heard before applicable to Christian Nationalism.

Ruth had no reason to follow Naomi’s God.

Most people today relate their circumstances in life to a higher power. Agnostics and atheists blame God for their and observed misfortunes; spiritually blinded, they use calamity as a case to reject God. The disciples revealed a misconception of misfortune when they asked who sinned that this man was born blind.

For Ruth, the history of Moab and Israel was turbulent. They were against each other, and when a man brought a Moabite woman into the tent, they were killed immediately with a spear. Why serve their God with all the cultural hostility? The land was not abundant. Of course, this was due to the disastrous cycle of backsliding during the time of the Judges, but still. Then, all the men died. What was the draw? Was it solely out of an emotional connection to Naomi?

Rahab feared for her life—still a wise choice—but this was not the case for Ruth. Naomi was bitter. There is no account of her erupting in praise. Her joy stolen. We can’t blame her. Nevertheless, we have contained in Ruth a story of evangelism. Not by preaching the word, but through love.

Something only the Holy Spirit can explain because the text does not explicitly say, but something drew her to leave her gods and cleave to the true God of Israel, despite circumstances the enemy could have used to convince her otherwise. The enemy takes advantage when we are weak and hurting. Despite the emotional state of Naomi, she was still a godly woman, born within the covenant and followed the Law of Moses. Her proximity to this was enough for a transfer of spiritual allegiance no matter what awaited. “No one can come to Me unless the Father draws him” John 6:44. That drawing power works through love, not policy.

For those in CN, authentic relationships developed with those we consider “liberal” or morally compromised bring conversion. This implies demonstrating the fruits of the Spirit while allowing the freedom of choice on their time according to the Spirit’s work on their hearts. Ruth did not need legislation or political power to be grafted into the nation of Israel. Ruth was led by the fractured but faithful life of Naomi.

This is also encouraging and sobering for us who claim to walk in the light. Words are not necessary to draw. I am confident there are many who have come to Christ by observing a disciple and others who have had reservations of one and the God they serve. There may be a Ruth next to us, watching, taking note, and when a storm comes, like the storm blowing in this country, let us pray they are drawn by the light in us and utter the words of Ruth, “Your people shall be my people and your God my God.”
