The Parable of the Wicked Tenants – Matthew 21:33-36

by W. Chaz Glass

I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The righteous will flourish like a palm tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Therefore, let us get up early to the vineyards. Let us see if the vine has budded, whether the grape blossoms are open, and the pomegranates are in bloom. And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. Three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground? And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it: And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down. He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

In a contemporary sense, this parable is addressed to those in Christ, temples of the living God, those who His spirit has been poured out upon, those who the mysteries of God have been entrusted to. We are His. Some have forgotten or have now rejected this truth, truth sent has been killed, a rebuke sent has been ignored, patience and long-suffering taken advantage of. Unfaithful, lukewarm servants. The grace of insight, discernment and revelation will be given to another who will allow it to till their spiritual soil and produce a harvest.

There are some that honor Him with their lips, but their heart is far from Him. They have heard but have rejected the word preached and taught. They appear dressed in wedding attire, but a closer examination by the discerning eyes sees the stains they try to hide with patches of pride.
